LADDER SAFETY - EXPERTS GUIDE

As for theoretical, it is easier to say the work with the use of ladder are less hazardous , compared to any other activities , but the critical issue that needs to take into account is that , still there are thousands and thousands of accidents are happening in the ladder every year , which even resulted in fatalities.

The work with the ladder are riskier because the uncertainty of ground conditions especially for portable ladders, the use of ladder for short duration which increase the likelihood of human errors and violations against the code of practice, the use of defective or unsuitable ladders etc.

To Understand the Ladder safety, we should be clear in two areas such as ,

· Hazards and Risks from work with ladder

· The Safety Measures to control the risks

Hazards & Risks from working with ladder:

· The slip out of ladder, due to the positing of ladder in excessive angle or the use of ladders in slippery areas

· The Falling of persons due to failure to maintain the three points of contact , carrying tools while climbing into the ladder, use of with damaged rungs , use of poor quality ladders etc.

· The falling of materials from the ladder due to the failure to use a tools bag, materials carrying systems etc.

· The Chance of electric shock by the use of unsuitable ladder for electrical works or presence of overhead power lines etc.

Safety Measures:

The Control measures for the ladder shall be divided into sections for easy understandings such as,

· Selection Of Ladder

· Positioning Of Ladder

· Use Of Ladder

· Inspection & Maintenance requirements

Positioning Of Ladder:

· Before siting the ladder , check that the ground conditions are even , stable and capable of withstanding the load

· Confirm that the area is free from loose soil and voids and drains

· If the area is made of loose soil , ensure that the area is compacted before siting the ladder

· Site the ladder on stable ,fixed upper points

· Position the ladder in a right angle (1 meter out for every 4 meter height) 75 degree

· Extend the ladder above stepping point at least 3 feet or 3 rungs to provide adequate hand hold for the person using the ladder

· Ensure that the area is free from other hazards such as overhead power lines and obstructions, projections etc.

· The ladder should be tied to a permanent structure wherever necessary to increase the stability

· Ensure that the ladder is secured at the both ends with the suitable base materials

· Where securing the ladder is not practicable , use the person to hold the ladder while in use , but remember most of the times it won’t be effective

· Confirm that the landing areas are provided with guard rails to prevent fall and the safe way is available to and from the landing point to the work area

Use Of ladder:

· Confirm that the person using the ladder is familiar with the precautions to be followed & hazards , risks involved

· Check the ladder, before use , to ensure it is free from defects , wear & tear etc

· Only one person should climb the ladder at one time

· Ensure that the person using the ladder is always maintaining the three points of contact , to reduce the likelihood of fall

· The ascending , descending of ladder , should be only done by facing towards the ladder

· The person using the ladder is provided with the tools bag , means of transportation of materials to reduce the risk of falling of objects

· Instruct the person of the dangers of overreaching & climbing in a sides

· If the power lines are present , confirm that the clearance distance is maintained otherwise the power lines are isolated to ensure safety

· Never allow the wooden ladder , which is painted, and which may obscure the defects

Inspection & Maintenance Requirements:

· Inspect the ladder before use , to ensure that is free from damage , wear and tear , corrosion

· Inspect at frequent intervals

· Inspect there is a doubt it is found to be faulty , damaged

· Ensure the maintenance is carried out in a periodical intervals

What does a safety specialist will Do???

What does a safety specialist will Do???

Safety specialists are appointed by the employer similar like safety officer and safety engineer to manage the Health and safety issues of the industry.

If the industry is too small and comparatively running with minimal number of employees;

Or else

If the industry feels, they cannot afford a salary to safety specialists, they may go for outsourcing like "Health and safety consultants" for short period.

Safety specialists are the ultimate responsible for the "Health and safety Management system"

Safety specialists will device the Health and safety plans to control the principle hazards of the organisation.

They are the ultimate adviser for the organisation to take workplace precautions and risk controls.

Safety specialists will carryout Monthly or quarterly safety audits in the HSE Performance in order to identify the potential weakness in safety management systems and to develop the next plan to improve HSMS performance of the organisation.

Such as

  • Identification of health and safety legal requirements applicable to the organisation
  • Identification of training needs for the employee from the worker to the management staff
  • Measuring the H&s performance level in a frequent interval
  • Planning for safety inspection and Audit
  • Ensuring that the Mandatory HSME Documents are recorded and maintained
  • Ensuring that the incidents are reported and investigated etc.

Finally the safety specialists assist the management to fulfill the legal Requirements related to health and safety and to control the hazards and risks involving in the workplace effectively.

What is safety engineering

What is safety Engineering?

What is Safety engineering, the common doubt for every students and professionals wanted to start their career in Health and safety.

Safety engineering is one of the department in engineering, which mostly concerns about the prevention of accidents and failures which may cause harm to employees, products, tools or environment.

The Study which focus on the variable accident prevention methods and underlying principles behind zero accidents.

Safety Career is an "Multi disciplinary function" ; In which you needs to familiarize yourself different sectors from the management aspects to the science behind the workers behavior, electricity, machines, chemicals, radiation, vibration, etc.

Let me Give you the practical example :

As you know the number of accidents in a day to day life is increasing, both in common life as well as at the workplace.

You can imagine any incident from the home fire to major catastrophic accidents, disaster happening in the industry etc.

We could not define the type of accidents happening in the industry (for example fire accident, electrical accident , fall from height etc) in a single post; it requires a detailed study of the various activities and relevant accidents.

Also the accidents cannot be prevented only by training or use of PPE, It requires various Safety plan and safety strategies with respect to the type of hazard.

For example to control the "Noise" in the industry, there are various strategies that can be employed such as

  • Avoidance of Noisy operations
  • Purchasing the Low noisy equipment's
  • Use of silencers
  • Drawing up clear maintenance schedules
  • Proper lubrication of machinery
  • Coating of noise resistant / absorbent materials in floor ,walls , ceilings
  • Provision of Ear plug and earmuff
  • Conducting periodical medical check up etc.

Similar like Noise , the safety engineering will involve various hazards and the different control principles.

In order to become an "industrial safety engineer" you must be keep your self familiar with all the aspects involving in your industry.

7 Deadly Hazards in Excavation works

The Hazards & risks arising from the Excavation

It’s Impossible to ensure the Excavation safety without understanding the possible hazards & risks that might present during digging,The following hazards may present during the excavation operations, may differ based on the work environment in which the excavation is takes place,

Deadly hazard 1: Collapse Of excavation

The Collapse of excavation which may due to,

  1. The soil conditions which unable to carry the own mass of its sides
  2. The selection of wrong type of excavation methods example : Mechanical excavation on the loose soil conditions
  3. The instability of soil to withstand the load , which may promoted by the bad weather conditions such as rain
  4. The Positioning of vehicles near to the excavation edges , which may affect the stability
  5. The lack of protective systems such as shoring , shielding
  6. The Presence of cave-in
  7. The positioning of removed soil near to the excavation sides , which may increase the weight on edges & leads to collapse.

Deadly hazard 2: Falling of persons inside the Excavation

The Falling of persons into the Excavation which may due to,
  • Lack of systems to protect the entry of persons into or near to the excavation such as missing of barricading ,
  • The lack of hazard communication systems to make the persons aware of excavation
  • The Lack of suitable means of access & egress into the excavation , which may increase the chance of climbing to the top & similarly the risk of fall

Deadly Hazard 3: Falling or dislodging of Materials

  • The Falling of objects, dislodgement of soil, falling of vehicle into the Excavation which may due to,
  • The lack of systems to prevent falling of objects such as missing of trench sheets , edge protections etc
  • The storage of removed soil near to the excavation edges
  • The positioning of vehicle’s or parking of vehicles near to the excavation without any measures to prevent over run such as hand brakes , wheel chokes.
  • The improper transmission of to and from the excavations ex: throwing.

Deadly Hazard 4: Cut or crush to underground services

The Presence of Underground services:

One of the Major hazards existing during the excavation operation is that, the presence of underground power lines such as water pipelines, electrical services, gas pipes, telecommunication lines etc

Always there is a risk of cut, crush, damage to the pipelines, cables, services which needs to be considered always before starting digging at any place.

Buried services are always riskier because of,
  • Their existence in unexpected locations
  • Sometimes they may very near to the ground lines
  • The change of service locations without notice to the owners etc

Deadly Hazard 5: Presence of toxic & Flammable Gases

The presence of toxic & flammable gases during excavation’s

Most of the times , the fatalities occur due to the presence of toxic gases , which may present due to micro biological decay or naturally forming gases in ground such as H2s , which may create risk to the workers involved in the excavation operations

Deadly Hazard 6: Oxygen deficiency

The Risk of asphyxiation and suffocation due to the reduced oxygen levels in the deep excavations, especially when the oxygen levels fall below the safe level.

It is also important to remember the Presence of snake, insects, also will create a risk.

Deadly Hazard 7: Flooding

The occurrence of flood either due to,
  1. Bursting of water pipelines
  2. The excavation above ground water levels
  3. The occurrence of rain which may create a risk of slip , fall and even drowning where the person trapped by the sudden release of water or any form of liquids.

Why the LPG Cylinders are exploding, during fire?

Have you ever had a doubt, why the LPG cylinders are exploding, during fire?

The Explosion, (the sudden release of blast wave) is one of the major reasons for the damage to buildings and injury to occupants during LPG leaks.

If the cylinder is not exploded during fire, most of the building damage and risk to neighborhood’s can be minimized.

Let’s come to the answer,

  • If the LPG Cylinder is subjected either to fire or any other heat source, the liquefied petroleum will change in to gaseous state. (As temperature increases the liquids will convert to gaseous stage )
  • If it is continuously subjects to heat, than the contents of LPG will restore to gaseous stage, which increases the internal pressure inside the Cylinder.
  • Though the Liquid space of the cylinder absorbs the heat and sinks, but in the gaseous space (the space above the liquid space) will not have any medium to reduce the heat, so most of the energy will be absorbed by the Cylinder.
  • If the cylinder subjected to heat, it will starts to melt and on a certain stage it will fail, in which the sudden release of pressurized gas space comes out as an explosion.

What to do when LPG Smell found in Home?

LPG Cylinders are most hazardous, which can kill the entire occupant’s in home.
Do you believe, all you family members, knew the action to take, when the LPG smell founds in kitchens or home.

Absolutely, the answer will be “No”

Imagine, if your mom or sister or any of your family member are not aware the actions to take in case of LPG Leaks, what will happen, even it cannot be imagined.

So here we are talking about the serious issue, which is worthy to read further,

If you have a doubt that the LPG may leak from cylinders, follow this 7 proven and tried steps to keep yourself safe.

  1. Turn off the regulator & valve both in LPG cylinder & stove
  2. Do not turn on or turn off any switches such as lights or fan (the minor spark produced from the switches can act as an ignition source and may leads to explosion)
  3. Open all your windows & doors to allow the LPG gas too dilute
  4. Get all your family member’s outside the home
  5. Do not try to seal or repair the leaks from yourself, hence you are not person trained in it.
  6.  Call to the supplier or agent, from whom you purchased the LPG cylinders.
  7. Inform the situation & wait until they arrive and repair.

What is the scope of Industrial Safety Diploma & Engineers?

What is the scope of Industrial Safety Diploma & Engineers?

“What is the Scope of industrial safety diploma”

The common questions among the students wish to take industrial safety engineering courses,

Workplaces are becoming unsafe; due to the number of factors such us,

The use of large machinery,
The use of hazardous chemicals,
The use of high voltage electricity,
The presence of excessive noise, vibration, heat etc,

The ILO Declared

“Every 15 Seconds a worker met an accident in his workplace”

Hope now, you can understand “How hazardous the industries are”

It’s not easier to perform the entire industrial activities safely, without separate mechanisms and manpower to control it.

Also, we cannot perform the Industrial activities without using machines, chemicals, electricity etc.

So the Industries need a competent Industrial safety engineers who knows “the casual factors of accidents and the methods to control it”

Also In every countries the Companies having a legal requirement to appoint competent

“Industrial safety engineers”

If the company fails to appoint competent industrial safety engineers to manage their risks, the companies may incur enforcement notices, criminal fines from the government authorities.

And now the awareness among the industries are grows up and the trade unions and insurance companies are insisting health and safety in the workplace.
